The Memorandum Book of Anthony De Hooges

One of the great pleasures of the Westfall project was finding Dirk Mouw’s book The Memorandum Book of Anthony De Hooges which provides English translations of the many notes the young De Hooges recorded while at the Rensselaerswyck colony. One of my favorites was a 1647 note about seeing a white whale in the Hudson river.

The original document was found in the New York State Archives digital collection and I even stumbled onto an artist’s interpretation from the great historical artist L. F. Tantillo.

Three great finds combined to make a nice little appendix tribute to the notations of this young bookkeeper from Holland.
